Augustus De Morgan (1806 – 1871) was a British mathematician and logician. He studied the geometric properies of complex numbers, formalised mathematical induction, suggested quaternions, and came up with new mathematical notation.

Augustus De Morgan was born in 1806 to a lieutenant-colonel in the British army. He passed through a variety of schools, taught by both Anglican and dis- senting clergy, and in 1823 entered Trinity College, Cambridge. Here he showed. a marked interest in mathematics and finished as fourth wrangler in 1827.
