Born in Bristol England, in 1904, the young Archie Leach had a troubled early life. He eventually escaped ( literally!) by joining the circus, becoming an expert tumbler. Eventually he made it to Hollywood, and ended up signing with Paramount.

He made his debut film in the comedy This is the Night (1932) as an Olympic javelin thrower, a role for which he disliked and threatened to leave Hollywood.
