Although he was acutely aware of the influence wielded by Bellini, Anna Bolena was “a logical extension of directions that Donizetti had already explored… it is more a product of a self-motivated maturation than had been recognized.”
Gaetano Donizetti thus describes to his wife the reception given to Anna Bolena, his twenty-ninth opera, composed in less than a month. The libretto by Felice Romani, one of the period’s most gifted librettists, gave him very strong characters facing situations of amazing dramatic power.
Anna Bolena marks Donizetti’s official entry among the elite of important opera composers of the early nineteenth century. Generally considered the watershed work of his artistic maturity, it represents the culmination of Donizetti’s gradual development toward a distinct personal style and new, extraordinary means of dramatic expression.
28 de ago. de 2007 · An in-house recording, the 1966 Anna Bolena captures an exciting performance, as the understandable but occasionally intrusive applause demonstrates. After one's ears adjust to the sound (decent for this type of source but buzzy in loud passages), the singing of fine vocalists in their prime can be enjoyed as they deliver Donizetti's passionate if unsubtle score with complete conviction.
