Mountstuart Elphinstone FRSE (6 October 1779 – 20 November 1859) was a Scottish statesman and historian, associated with the government of British India. He later became the Governor of Bombay (now Mumbai ) where he is credited with the opening of several educational institutions accessible to the Indian population.

Alexander Mountstuart Elphinstone, 19th Lord Elphinstone and 5th Baron Elphinstone (born 15 April 1980), is a Scottish peer in both the Peerage of Scotland and the Peerage of the United Kingdom. Early life and family [edit] Lord Elphinstone is the son of James Elphinstone, 18th Lord Elphinstone, and Willa Mary Gabrielle Chetwode.
He was appointed a lord of session 4 March 1586. He was at this time known as "Master James Elphinstone of Innernochtie".
