Di salute cagionevole, fin da piccolo si dimostrò molto delicato tanto che la madre lo chiamava “la mia fragile porcellana di Dresda”. Figlio di un padre perennemente disoccupato, fu allevato dalla madre, figura centrale della sua infanzia assieme alla sorella Mabel.
