Someone else can correct me if I am wrong, but Trebizond in the 13th century was never a puppet of the Byzantines (at this time, it was one of three successor states, all claiming to be the legitimate Roman Empire). At some point, Trebizond gave up the mantle of trying to become Byzantium, and they settled for being the Empire of Trebizond ...
