He held office as Prime Minister from 1855 to 1865, and during that period was responsible for the Royal Commission, agreeing the building of numerous forts around the Island.

In 1762 he entered Parliament and continued a member until his death. He did not attain to distinction in politics, but was fond of travel and social life, and the assemblies at his house in Hanover Square were famous.
