The cross is nicely maker marked with number '1' indicating production by the company of 'Deschler & Sohn' from München, the cross is '900' silver marked. The cross comes on it's original 49cms long sized ribbon.

The VC was awarded for his actions during the Waikato-Hauhau Maori War, New Zealand on 29 April 1864, while the Iron Cross was awarded for tending the wounded during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71.

He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, with oak leaves, swords and diamonds. He survived the war, but was held as a prisoner in the Soviet Union until 1955.
