Hace 5 días · It was claimed in 1535 by Henry Lord Stafford that the chapel there, founded by his ancestors, had been allowed to fall into decay and that the surrounding houses, once intended for poor people, were inhabited by 'unthrifty persons of evil living'.

The charge was false and on 4 June 1685, the bill of attainder against him was reversed. 18th century to present. The town was represented in Parliament from 1780 by the playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan.
