Maybelle Carter died in 1978 after a few years of poor health, and was interred next to her husband, Ezra, in Hendersonville Memory Gardens in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Two of their daughters – Helen and Anita – are buried nearby.

The original group split up when A.P. Carter and Sara Carter left in 1944, but Maybelle Carter and her daughters continued performing as The Carter Sisters.
