From her husband's mansion at Mount Stewart , County Down , in the 1790s her circle of friends and acquaintances extended to figures engaged in the democratic politics of the United Irishmen .

For her great beauty she was known as La Belle Stuart and served as the model for an idealised, female Britannia.
