Custis grew up at Mount Vernon, George and Martha Washington’s estate, then moved with the family in 1789 to the seat of government in New York following the election that made her step-grandfather the first president of the United States.
Known as "Nelly Custis," Eleanor Parke Custis Lewis was the granddaughter of Martha Washington from her first marriage, and the adopted daughter of George Washington. When Martha married General Washington in 1759 she was the widow of Daniel Parke Custis [1711-1757], and had two young children, John Parke Custis [1754-1781] and Martha Parke Custis [1755-1773].
