Although Imperial forces quickly suppressed the Bohemian Revolt, his participation expanded the fighting into the Palatinate, whose strategic importance drew in the Dutch Republic and Spain , then engaged in the Eighty Years' War.

The electors in 1630-1632 included two, the Margrave of Brandenburg and the Duke of Saxe-Wittenburg, who were Protestants and likely - but not certain - to vote for Gustavus Adolphus as emperor.
