La dinastía Rúrika gobernó la Rus de Kiev, y después Moscovia, hasta el siglo XVI. En 987, el Gran Príncipe Vladimiro I de Kiev se bautizó, y fijó en Kiev el centro de su poder.

Vladimir was the son of Grand Prince Vsevolod I Yaroslavich (ruled Kiev 1078–93) and Irina, the daughter of the Byzantine emperor Constantine IX Monomachus .
