Puritanism and piracy together helped colonize New England with the zealous oversight of Robert Rich, 1 st Earl of Warwick. Known as the “Pious Pyrate” in his day, Warwick sponsored half the pirates in the Atlantic between 1626 and 1630. His proceeds from the plunder allowed him to invest in the various companies that sponsored colonists.
Robert Rich married first, Frances Hatton, daughter of Sir Frances Hatton and Elizabeth Gawdy. His second wife was Eleanor Wortley (m. 30 March 1646), widow of Henry of Ditchley, 1st Baronet Lee of Quarendon. Robert Montagu, 3rd Earl of Manchester (1634–1682), who married Anne Yelverton, the only daughter of Sir Christopher Yelverton, 1st Baronet. Lady Frances Montagu, who married Henry Saunderson. Lady Anne Montagu (d. 1689), who married as his second wife her second cousin Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Holland and future 5th Earl of Warwick.

Robert Rich, later Lord Holland, was the eldest son and third of seven children born to Robert Rich, 1st Earl of Warwick (1559–1619) and his first wife Penelope (1563–1607). His parents separated soon after Henry's birth, although they did not formally divorce until 1605, when Penelope married her long-time partner, Charles Blount, 8th Baron Mountjoy (1563-1606).
