The film, "Encounters at the End of the World," opened on June 11, 2008, in New York City and around the United States later in June. In January 2009, it was nominated for the best documentary feature academy award. Herzog's work was supported by the Antarctic Artists and Writers Program of NSF's Office of Polar Programs.
