The Villa Mairea, designed by Alvar Aalto in 1937-38, is one of the seminal houses of the twentieth century. Designed as a residence for a progressive industrialist Harry Gullichsen and his art collector wife Maire, it manifests a modern utopia; the luxury villa was seen as an experiment in the modern life style and architecture that could be later applied to standard housing .
