About Vassar College. Founded in 1861, Vassar College is a liberal arts institution with a main campus in Poughkeepsie, a town in the southeastern region of New York state that is 85 miles from New York city. Students interested in teacher certification, the theoretical study of education, or the study of cross-cultural education are assigned as interns in the elementary or secondary school in Clifden, Ireland where you shadow local teachers and assist with lessons.
