  7. Biography. Ernst Lubitsch was born January 29, 1892, in Berlin, as the son of jewish master tailor Ssimcha (Simon) Lubitsch and his wife Anna, born Lindenstaedt. He went to preschool from 1899 to 1902 and then attended Sophien-Gymnasium. In 1908, he started an apprenticeship at Hoffmann & Co.'s mercer shop at Königsstraße.
