The 1st Baron Carpenter was a prominent military man, from 1715 he was a member of Parliament for Whitchurch and from 1722 for Westminster. The 2nd Baron Carpenter was the Member of Parliament for Morpeth. From 1717 to 1727, Weobley was from 1741 to 1747.

His uncle was George Carpenter, 2nd Earl of Tyrconnell who died 15 April 1805. He was educated at St John's College, Cambridge.
