Minkowski, who was born in Alexoten, Lithuania, was taken to Koenigsberg, Germany, by his parents when he was eight years old. He held chairs of mathematics at Koenigsberg in 1895, Zurich in 1896, and in Goettingen (where a special chair was created for him) in 1902.

In 1905, Albert Einstein, in his paper on special relativity, argued that distance is not an absolute quantity but depends on the reference system in which it is measured.

He showed in 1907 that the special theory of relativity of 1905, developed by his former student Albert Einstein , could be understood geometrically as a theory of four-dimensional space-time , now known as the " Minkowski spacetime ".
In this sense the Minkowski Institute is without a counterpart in the world. The use of such an advanced research strategy, which stimulates creativity and induces insights, will allow the Minkowski Institute to establish itself as an international institution that will lead the research on the most outstanding and urgent open questions in science (initially in physics).
21 de nov. de 2009 · For the historian or philosopher of science, Hermann Minkowski is known for the formulation of Special Relativity in terms of four-dimensional space-time. The original text is the famous 1908 “Raum und Zeit” , but it is rarely mentioned that Minkowski is the author of a geometry of numbers “Geometrie der Zahlen” , a most important work in number theory.

Hermann studied invariants and wrote a paper on the decomposition of integers into the sum of five squares (a special case of Waring's problem ). Minkowski did very important work in the study of non-Euclidean geometry using tensor calculus.
