  2. The composer of ‘Stracathro’, Glasgow merchant Charles Hutcheson (1792-1850), was a founder of the Glasgow Dilettanti Society whose aim was the improvement of the fine arts. A fellow member of St George’s Church (now St George’s Tron) was Sir James Campbell, Lord Provost of Glasgow, who in 1848 bought the mansion of Stracathro in Angus after which this tune is named.

Only surviving son of William Shaw Adamson (1851-1936) and his wife Nora Jane, daughter of Rt. Hon. James Alexander Campbell of Stracathro, born 5 November 1886. Educated at Fettes College and Trinity Hall, Cambridge.

  5. In 1874, the house and estate was purchased by Sir James Campbell (1790–1876), Lord Provost of Glasgow and father of Prime Minister Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman (1836–1908). Stracathro House was requisitioned by the government in 1938 but reverted to private ownership following its sale by Tayside Health Board in 2003.

  7. It is presumed that the hall was attached to the Stracathro parish church and that the church served the population of Stracathro estate. The scheme was said to be the idea of the former laird of Stracathro (James Alexander Campbell) thirty years previously, and was brought to fruition in 1930 by the laird's grandson, Hugh Campbell. 1
