This miniature, the size of a large coin, forms a pair to that of her husband, James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell, and is dated 1566, the year of their marriage. This was a political alliance, encouraged by Mary, Queen of Scots and urged on by Lady Jean Gordon's family, but it was not to last.

Jean Gordon, Countess of Bothwell. Lady Jean Gordon was a wealthy Scottish noblewoman and the second wife of James Hepburn. Bothwell married Gordon on 24 th February 1566 at Canongate Church. The marriage was short-lived and the couple soon divorced on May 7, 1567, on account of infidelity.
