  3. John Gordon, 13th Earl of Sutherland, was the son of Alexander Gordon, 12th Earl of Sutherland, and Lady Jean Gordon. He married Agnes Elphinstone, daughter of Alexander Elphinstone, 4th Lord Elphinstone and Jean Livingstone, Feb. 1, 1600. He has been described as a godly man known for his integrity and fairness.

  7. Life. He was born on 28 May 1735 the son of William Sutherland, 17th Earl of Sutherland and his wife Lady Elizabeth Wemyss. [citation needed] In 1759 as a captain in the 56th Regiment of Foot he raised a regiment, the original Sutherland Fencibles, from his own Clan Sutherland, to resist the threatened invasion from France.
