Spencer Compton Cavendish, Marquess of Hartington and 8th Duke of Devonshire (1833–1908), was born on 23 July 1833 at Holker Hall, Lancashire, the eldest son of William Cavendish, 2nd Earl of Burlington and afterwards 7th Duke of Devonshire (1808–1891), and his wife, Lady Blanche Georgiana (b. 1812).
