The Ikalto Academy offered instruction in a number of areas, including theology, rhetoric, astronomy, philosophy, geography, geometry, hymn singing, metalworking, ceramics, and viticulture. It is known that the great Georgian poet, Shota Rustaveli, received his education there.

An academy was founded at the monastery in the early 12th century. According to a legend the famous 12th century Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli studied there.

Akademia e Ikaltos ishte një institucion kulturor dhe shkollor i rëndësishëm që u themelua në shekujt 11-13 në Mbretërinë e Gjeorgjisë. Ikalto Academy is a remarkable architectural building. It was built in VIII-IX centuries and in XI-XII centuries; Arsen of Ikalto (Arsen Ikaltoeli) sent from Gelati Academy by David the Builder founded an academy here. The building of the Academy was a two-storey large construction (43 m X 35 m) built with cobblestones.
