Biography Early life. Maria Amalia was born in the Hofburg in Vienna eleven weeks after the death of her infant brother Leopold Joseph, her parents' only son.Her mother, Wilhelmine Amalia of Brunswick-Lüneburg was unable to conceive more children after her, supposedly because her father had contracted syphilis and passed it onto his wife, rendering her infertile.

According to her wishes, her heart was buried at her husband’s feet in the Imperial Crypt, while her body remained in the convent she had founded and was buried under the high altar. Her son-in-law’s reign lasted just three years and ended with his death in 1745.

Charlotte Felicitas of Brunswick-Lüneburg (8 March 1671–29 September 1710) was a German noblewoman. She was born into the House of Hanover and later married into the House of Este, which were both part of the House of Welf. She was thus the Duchess of Modena by marriage. She died in childbirth. Some sources refer to her simply as Charlotte .
