He was the son of Emperor Dom Pedro I and Empress Dona Maria Leopoldina, and was given the name Pedro de Alcântara João Carlos Leopoldo Salvador Bebiano Francisco Xavier de Paula Leocádio Miguel Gabriel Rafael Gonzaga de Bragança.
