Timothy Dalton had been approached to play Bond several times before finally signing a three-film contract on 30 July 1986 following Roger Moore's retirement from the role. Dalton took the Bond character away from the light-hearted playboy of Moore, harking back to the gritty realism of Ian Fleming 's novels instead of fantasy plots and humour.
