John Gielgud nacque nel distretto di Kensington, a Londra, da Kate Terry e Frank Gielgud (cattolico di origini lituane).Nipote di Kate Terry, sorella della celebre attrice Ellen Terry, frequentò la scuola di Westminster, dove ottenne la King's Scholarship, dopodiché studiò alla Royal Academy of Dramatic Art ed ebbe un iniziale successo come attore teatrale in ruoli classici.
