Gifford's father was in organized crime, and he spent his childhood largely in Chicago and New Orleans living in hotels. His childhood, as recounted in his long-running series of autobiographical tales known collectively as the Roy stories, is explored in the 2020 documentary Roy's World: Barry Gifford's Chicago.

You get a real sense of time and place here while filtered through the voice and perspective of a real talent that has done so much that I’ve personally appreciated over the years.
28 de feb. de 2020 · It’s the observational detail in his writing that makes it compelling and Christopher aims to take the same approach here, not just telling tales but building up a world. He’s interested, of course, in the points where Gifford’s life and Roy’s intersect, but also in the spirit of the times and the very close-knit community they inhabited.
