25 de may. de 2012 · For Naughty Marietta, Young had to tie the songs to the action and emotion of the scene and characters, yet still make them able to stand on their own, outside the context of the show, in order to sell sheet music (still a booming business in 1910). Other matters of practicality intervened as well, such as following the conventions of operetta.
Nominated for an Academy Award for best picture, W.S. Van Dyke’s Naughty Marietta is a disappointingly stiff musical starting Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. Featuring a host of Victor Herbert’s most famous songs, this is a film that should have been much better than it is.
