Specifically, the friendship between these two men sheds light on what to look for in our friends and, more importantly, how to be a godly friend to others. Scripture describes the friendship between David and Jonathan as a covenant. We read that in 1 Samuel 18:3: “Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.”
Another vital element of a covenant friendship is mutual respect. For a friendship to thrive, both parties must respect one another. This means valuing each other’s opinions, listening to each other’s concerns, and honoring each other’s boundaries. Jonathan and David had a great deal of respect for one another.
The language used to describe the bond between David and Jonathan is indicative not only of the intensity of their friendship but the way in which their friendship rooted them deeply in a life of love—that is, a life of being truly human. Jonathan’s soul was “knit” (Hebrew: qashar) to the soul of David.
