Gerald Ford served in the House of Representatives from January 3, 1949 to December 6, 1973, being reelected twelve times, each time with more than 60% of the vote. He became a member of the House Appropriations Committee in 1951, and rose to prominence on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, becoming its ranking minority member in 1961.

Ford is the only chief executive who was not elected as either president or vice president. Ford grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and became a football star at the University of Michigan.
