Caroline's two spoilt sons, especially the elder one Stephen, caused her much embarrassment and distress by gambling and falling into debt.

Holland House was built by Henry Fox, 1st Baron Holland (1705–1774), of Holland House in Kensington, to the designs of the amateur architect Thomas Wynn, 1st Baron Newborough (1736–1807) (created Baron Newborough in 1766). It was said to have been inspired by Cicero's villa at Formiae on the coast of Baiae.

  7. These include Melbury, home of the sitter's elder brother Stephen Fox, created 1st Earl of Ilchester, 1756, and Holland House which had passed, 1889, on the death of the widow of the 4th and last Lord Holland to the 5th Earl of Ilchester. The house was destroyed by enemy action in World War II.
