  3. 3 de jul. de 2016 · History has not been kind to James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton. Nowhere is his indictment more apparent than at Greyfriars Kirkyard. Other controversial characters in the Scottish Reformation are revered there and at nearby Saint Giles, but not James Douglas, who ruled Scotland from 1572 until 1580, first as de facto regent, then as Regent, and later as the power presiding over the Privy Council.

Notwithstanding all of this, the 3rd Earl of Morton’s second daughter, Beatrix, who had married Robert 6th Lord Maxwell, felt aggrieved at being overlooked and her son, John 8th Lord Maxwell tried to lay claim to the title when Regent Morton fell from power in 1581.

  6. James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton (c. 1525 - June 2, 1581), was the last, and arguably the most successful, of the four regents of Scotland during the minority of King James VI. However he met an unfortunate end: during his time as regent he introduced the maiden, a primitive guillotine, to Scotland, and he was eventually executed by it himself.
