Walter Devereux was born probably sometime in the range 1256-1271, the son of Baron William Devereux of Lyonshall and his first wife, Alice Grandison. His mother died by 1271, while he was still young, and in which year his father married a second time to Lucy Burnell.
History: This was the surname of the Earls of Essex from 1572 to 1641. Walter Devereux, 1st Earl of Essex, led an attempted colonization of Ulster, and his son, Robert, 2nd Earl of Essex, briefly held the position of lord lieutenant of Ireland in 1599.

His viscountcy devolved on Walter Devereux, who was a younger grandson of the 1st viscount and cousin to the 1st Earl of Essex. His death led to a large display of mourning. Parliament contributed £5,000 to the expenses of his funeral and he was buried in Westminster Abbey .
