21 de ene. de 2020 · About Anne of Cleves. Jane Seymour, Henry VIII's beloved third wife, had died. France and the Holy Roman Empire were forging an alliance. Though Jane Seymour had given birth to a son, Henry knew that he needed more sons to ensure the succession. His attention turned towards a small German state, Cleves, which might prove a solid Protestant ally.
As-Vijers states, “For Catherine of Cleves the Book of Hours functioned not only as an aid for prayer, but also as an exclusive object that she could show with pride to family and friends”.84 As we have seen through the juxtaposition between images of Catherine and Arnold in the book, the manuscript highlights the superior divine relationship that Catherine hoped to achieve through prayer.
19 de abr. de 2021 · Not only did we get the only known leaf from a fifteenth manuscript illuminated by the Master of Catherine of Cleves, but we also got it for free. I slipped the illumination into the last two weeks of my exhibition, Now and Forever: The Art of Medieval Time , enabling visitors to compare this late work by the artist to Catherine’s Hours that he painted about twenty years prior.
