In 1511 Duke John III of Cleves inherited Jülich and Berg through marriage with Maria of Jülich-Berg, the daughter of the last Duke, William IV. She inherited her father's estates: Jülich and Berg with the County of Ravensberg .
When Maria von Jülich-Berg was born on 3 August 1491, in Herzogtum Jülich-Berg, Holy Roman Empire, her father, Wilhelm IV. von Jülich-Berg, was 36 and her mother, Sibylle von Hohenzollern, was 24. She married Johann III Herzog von Jülich-Kleve-Berg on 1 October 1510.

She married Herzog Wilhelm von Jülich-Kleve-Berg on 18 July 1546, in Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 4 daughters. She died on 11 December 1581, in Weinstraße, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, at the age of 50, and was buried in Cleve, Cleves.
