The County of Anhalt arose upon the death of Duke Bernhard in 1212, when his sons divided their heritage. Albert I became Duke of Saxony, and Henry I went on to rule the Ascanian lands, now separated from Saxony, as Count of Anhalt. In 1218, Henry I took the title of prince and thereby was the real founder of the princely House of Anhalt.
