The princess was just 17 years old when she married the 39-year-old archduke. Archduke Joseph had no male heirs, since his first wife, Grand Duchess Alexandra Pavlovna of Russia, died giving birth to a stillborn daughter. Princess Hermine also died in childbirth at the age of 19, after giving birth to fraternal twins.
Princess of Anhalt Princess Elisabeth was christened into the Lutheran faith at the Wörlitz Church on 1 October 1857. The date also marked the 63rd birthday of her grandfather Duke Leopold IV of Anhalt who was named as a godparent along with his daughter the Duchess Agnes of Saxe-Altenburg, his brother Prince Wilhelm of Anhalt, the Queen Elisabeth Luise of Prussia and the Queen Marie of Bavaria.
Known for her work for the blind, Princess Alexandra is Patron of Action for Blind People as well as being President of Sightsavers. In 2014 Her Royal Highness attended the World Bank River Blindness Fortieth Anniversary Summit in Washington DC, USA and learned about the river blindness prevention programmes which continue to be replicated across other neglected tropical diseases.

Marie Auguste Prinzessin von Anhalt wurde als Tochter von Herzog Eduard von Anhalt und dessen Gemahlin Luise Charlotte Marie Agnes aus dem Geschlecht Sachsen-Altenburg geboren. Ihr Vater wurde im Jahr 1918 für einige Monate regierender Herzog von Anhalt. Sie war die ältere Schwester des nominell letzten Herzogs Joachim Ernst von Anhalt .
