When Sir Gerald FitzGerald 11th Earl of Kildare was born about 1525, his father, Sir Gerald FitzGerald, 9th Earl of Kildare, was 40 and his mother, Elizabeth Grey, was 30. He married Mabel Browne on 29 May 1554, in London, England. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 3 daughters.
FitzGerald, Maurice fitz Gerald (1194–1257), lord of Offaly, justiciar, was son of Gerald fitz Maurice FitzGerald (qv) and his wife Eva, daughter of Robert de Bermingham. Surnamed "Gerald the Great". Gearoid Mór Fitzgerald was appointed Lord Deputy in 1477, but was replaced by Leonard Grey on the supposition that an Englishman could do the job better. The lords of the Pale set up a breakaway parliament in protest, and Edward IV was forced to re-install Gearóid Mór .
Gerald FitzGerald, 5th Earl of Kildare (died 1410), a son of the 4th Earl, leading opponent of the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury. The 5th Earl had sons, but they presumably predeceased him. John FitzGerald, 6th Earl of Kildare ( de jure; d. 1427), a younger son of the 4th Earl.
