  1. James Douglas, 1st Earl of Morton (d. 1493 ) was created Earl of Morton in 1458 . He was a descendant of Agnes Dunbar, 4th Countess of Moray (known as "Black Agnes of Dunbar").

  2. His younger brothers were James Douglas, 1st Lord Mordington and Sir Francis Douglas of Sandilands. Shortly before Douglas was born, his grandfather inherited the Earldom of Angus and Lordship of Douglas from a distant cousin; in 1591, his father in turn succeeded to the titles as 10th Earl, and the boy adopted the style of "Master of Angus" or "Lord Douglas".

  3. In 1562, Morton joined Lord James (now Earl of Moray) on an expedition to the north against George Gordon, 4th Earl of Huntly, and was largely responsible for his defeat at Corrichie. He now replaced Huntly as Lord Chancellor. In 1565, (perhaps surprisingly) Morton backed Henry, Lord Darnley, his cousin, in his suit to marry Mary.
