When King William IV died, his niece could not ascend the throne of Hanover due to the Salic law prohibiting female rule, therefore Ernest, heir to William’s seat in Hanover, became King of Hanover on the death of his brother.
Princess Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was born on 19 May 1744. She was the youngest daughter of Duke Charles Louis Frederick of Mecklenburg, Prince of Mirow (1708–1752), and his wife Princess Elisabeth Albertine of Saxe-Hildburghausen (1713–1761). It would be in Mecklenburg-Strelitz where the final separation of Luise and Friederike would take place. During a family gathering at their father’s summer residence Schloss Hohenziertz, Luise fell ill succumbing on 19 July 1810 surrounded by her family, including Friederike who had helped nurse her through this fatal illness.
Frederica's father broached with the Prussian royal family the idea of marriage between their children, and the Prussians were not averse. On 14 March 1793, the Princesses of Mecklenburg-Strelitz "coincidentally" met the Prussian King Frederick William II at the Prussian Theatre in Frankfurt-am-Main.
