  3. Martin van Meytens (1695-1770) was born in Stockholm, Sweden, and began his artistic career under the tutelage of his father, Martin van Meytens the Elder (1648-1736). He quickly built up his reputation, and was to become one of the most significant Austrian painters of the period, as well as a leading exponent of the Baroque courtly portrait.

It shows the Ladies’ Carousel held by Maria Theresa in the Winter Riding School of the Vienna Hofburg in 1743 to celebrate the retaking of Prague by Austrian troops during the War of the Austrian Succession.
