Saskia Uylenburgh werd geboren op 2 augustus 1612 te Leeuwarden als het jongste kind in een gezin van acht. Haar vader, jurist Rombertus van Uylenburgh, en haar moeder, Sjoukje Ozinga, waren beiden al relatief oud bij haar geboorte, respectievelijk 58 en 47 jaar.
Rembrandt most likely met Saskia while working for her cousin, Hendrick Uylenburgh, an art dealer who had a workshop in Amsterdam. They had married on 22 June 1634, two years before this etching, and remained together for eight years until Saskia's untimely death at the age of 30.

The high bodice and full skirt accommodate her heavily pregnant form, and Rembrandt emphasises the idea of fertility by giving her an armful of flowers.

Marriage with Saskia brought him a large dowry and elevated his social status.
