William Godwin, född 3 mars 1756 i Wisbech i Cambridgeshire, död 7 april 1836 i London, var en brittisk filosof, samhällskritiker och författare. Han gifte sig 1797 med Mary Wollstonecraft, var far till Mary Shelley och William Godwin den yngre . William Godwin var utbildad frikyrko präst men blev ateist och lämnade kyrkan.
Mary Godwin (1797–1851) gained fame as Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein. Half a year younger than her was Claire Clairmont, Mary Jane's only daughter, to whom she showed favouritism. The youngest, and the only child of the second marriage, was William Godwin the Younger (1803–1832).
