Because of this, Prince Sizzo was not entitled to use the title of Prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. Instead, he was created Prince of Leutenberg on 21 June 1860. [1] In spite of being denied the use of the title of Prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, Prince Sizzo was granted succession rights to the principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt in the event of the extinction of all male dynasts .
In 1710, his father had accepted the elevation, but not made it public. After his father died in 1710, Louis Frederick I inherited Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and published the promotion. From 15 April 1711, he styled himself Prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. At the time, the principality had around 45 000 inhabitants.

Charles was a son of Landgrave Ernest Constantine of Hesse-Philippsthal (1771–1849) from his marriage to Louise (1775–1808), daughter of Prince Charles Frederick of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. Charles succeeded his father as the Landgrave of Hesse-Philippsthal in 1849, after his older brother Ferdinand had died in 1839.
