This extensive consultation results in the preparation of detailed recommendations that are submitted to the World Heritage Committee at its annual meetings. Ensuring that World Heritage sites sustain their outstanding universal value is an increasingly challenging mission in today’s complex world, where sites are vulnerable to the effects of uncontrolled urban development, unsustainable tourism practices, neglect, natural calamities, pollution, political instability, and conflict.
World Heritage. The 1972 Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage recognizes that certain places on Earth are of "outstanding universal value" and should form part of the common heritage of humankind. Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations.
Vietnam holds the second-highest number of World Heritage Sites in Southeast Asia, after Indonesia with ten sites. The Complex of Huế Monuments was the first site in Vietnam to be inscribed on the list at the 17th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Colombia in 1993.
