He was in large measure self-educated: his views on life and letters were worked out with an almost desperate geniality in order to preserve and develop a relish for the color and individuality of experience.
Relatives. Charles Lamb (brother) Mary Anne Lamb (3 December 1764 – 20 May 1847) was an English writer. She is best known for the collaboration with her brother Charles on the collection Tales from Shakespeare (1807). Mary suffered from mental illness, and in 1796, aged 31, she stabbed her mother to death during a mental breakdown.

Both he and his sister Mary (1764–1847), who had been released into Charles' care after killing their mother in a fit of insanity in 1796, began writing for children with the encouragement of William Godwin, their works including the Tales from Shakespeare (1807) for which they are best known.
Written about a dream world, the essay Dream Children by Charles Lamb belongs to his famous work Essays of Elia (1823) published in London magazines. Referring to himself by the pseudonym Elia, Lamb has penned down the essays as personal accounts of his life devoid of any didactic or moral lessons.
Charles Lamb is generally considered the master of personal essays of which Montaigne is the greatest exponent. His essays are collected in Essays of Elia and Last Essays of Elia. In literary history he is remembered as the Prince of English essayists. His essays are marked by self- revelation, humour and pathos, and a conversational style.
Despite his success as a writer, Lamb's personal life was marked by tragedy and hardship. In 1796, his sister Mary experienced a mental breakdown and killed their mother in a fit of madness. Lamb took on the responsibility of caring for Mary, ensuring her well-being, and shielding her from the social stigma attached to mental illness.
